Laureta Belzy, known as Grandma, Gran, Ta-ta, and Madam Frankel, was born on May 11, 1925, in L’Asile, Haiti, to her parents, Lalaure Belzy and Fanelie Maignan. She was the youngest of 5 children. Growing up in a big family taught her the importance of love, unity, and sacrifice, values that she passed down to her own family.
In 1962, Laureta married Frankel Malivert and together they raised 7 children, continuing her legacy. She was widowed in 1999, yet her strength and devotion to her family never wavered.
For nearly 75 years, Laureta worked in commerce as an entrepreneur. Rain or shine, she faithfully went to the market. She would leave for the flea market as early as 3:00 a.m. on Mondays and return home by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, serving as the main provider and head of household. She retired in her late 70’s and devoted the remainder of her life to spending time with those she loved. Laureta journeyed back and forth between Haiti and the U.S. to ensure she remained present in the lives of all her family in both countries. She touched every generation of her family with love and guidance. Laureta devoted much of her life as a Christian through church involvement, missionary work and serving others. She was the backbone of her neighborhood in L’Asile. Her generosity never failed, she never forgot to provide for those in need.
She was known for her boldness, always speaking her mind; her strength and independence; her sense of humor, never backing down from telling a good joke; and work ethic. She was truly a strong, hardworking woman. Laureta found joy in singing Chants d’Espérance, with her favorite songs being Salut Le Monde Se Jesus and Mwen Gin You Kouronn Ou Gin You Kouronn. She loved praying and was referred to as “Prayer Warrior” by her grandchildren. Through prayer, she anointed and blessed her family, leaving a spiritual covering that will last for generations.
On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, God decided it was time for her to come home. As we hold onto the memories she leaves behind, she will be remembered for living a full 100 years, for her contagious smile, and for raising and loving the legacy she built.
She was a mother to Jean Robert Mathurin, Alain Malivert & Sandy Gassant, Irene Malivert, Nancia Malivert, Gasner Malivert, Merita Malivert and Guislet Malivert; grandmother to Maxwoody Malivert & Alexandra Civil Malivert, Fara Malivert & Rousse Lapaix, Sophia Gassant, Junior Malivert & Kadidja Edmond-Malivert, Kervens Malivert Sr. & Shaprell M. May she rest in eternal peace.
