Marie-Carmen Charles was born on April 5, 1932, in Tomasik, Ayiti, to the late Limorin Bastia and Rosiette Pierre. Her father, Limorin Bastia, believed that God sent him to populate Plateau Central, as the area was empty before he had his 65 children, a list I won't include. He felt that there was little need for extensive education for them.
God brought her husband, Noel Charles, into her life to help uplift her. Limorin did not value educating girls, so Noel took it upon himself to teach her how to read. It was uncommon for a man to teach his wife to read 70 years ago; many men preferred partners who could not read and never considered teaching them.
Madame Noel's mission in life was to support her family, which included everyone with the last names Charles, Carvil, and Bastia. While she had limited formal schooling, she was incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable. It's hard to imagine how much more she could have impacted the world.
After having six children in seven years in Haiti, she moved to the U.S. while pregnant with her seventh child. Despite facing immense challenges as a single mother, including legal, educational, social, racial, and financial obstacles, she chose to care for her children in Haiti. As conditions in Haiti worsened, she brought all her children to the U.S., where they became respectable and contributing members of society. She also dedicated herself to raising her nieces and nephews, doing everything she could to support them without excuses or complaints. They too are making a positive difference wherever they are.
She lived by three mottos centered around charity:
1. If you don't believe in charity, you don't believe in God. 2. God blesses you so that you can bless those who are less fortunate. 3. Serving others is our main purpose on this earth.
She had a unique perspective, valuing education beyond traditional schooling and believing more in God than in organized religion. Her beliefs were reflected in how she lived her life and influenced others.
On Saturday, November 15, 2025, she was called Home, as the Lord told her that her mission would continue without her. She was predeceased by her two sons, Judex and Yves Pean and grandchildren, Odney Jr. and Andrew who brought great joy to her life. Their memories will always be cherished by those who knew them.
