Odes Saul Obituary

Mr. Odes Saul was born in Bombardopolis, Haiti, in May 25, 1949. Orphaned at the age of 16, he migrated to Port-au-Prince in 1967, where he worked as a laborer, carpenter, and electrician. His brother Charles, encouraged by Baptist missionaries, began to paint successfully, which prompted Odes to try his hand at it as well in the early 1970s.  In December 14, 1974, he was joined in Holy Matrimony to his love, Murriana Chery and they were blessed with 8 children; four boys and four girls, who are Maxime Saul, Lordine Herard, Denly Saul, Odley Saul, Baudlair Saul, Murriane Dubuisson, Odalie Bazile, and Cardina Cil.

In 1975 several of his paintings were chosen by Andre Malraux and Jean-Marie Drot for an exhibition in Paris and Auxerre and were reproduced for an article in Vogue magazine. He has traveled around the world, especially in the United States, to exhibit his paintings, which are quite popular in many parts of the world.  His works are shown in various foreign countries, notably France, Italy, Jamaica, Spain and Japan, where his work is quite popular, and the U.S., where they have been sold at the Sotheby Parke-Bernet Auction House in New York.

In 1996, Mr. Saul suffered a massive stroke while he was at his house in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and two more strokes throughout the years while he was living in the United States.  This tragic events, and most horrible experiences had many negative effects on his life, but he never stopped fighting to provide for his family; to take care of his wife and his 8 children, who are all here today to celebrate his life.

In 2015, it was discovered that he had a stomach cancer, and he was given only 6 months to live.  Even then, Odesstill found ways to fight, traveling back and forth to Haiti to continue to build his legacy and provide for his family.

Four years later, on Tuesday June 18, 2019, at the earliest hours of the day, the Lord decided to end Mr. Saul’s sufferings here on Earth and call him to Heaven.

Today, it is with sadness as well as joy, that we are here to celebrate Odes Saul’s life and legacy.  Mr. Odes Saul has touched so many lives during the 70+ years that he has lived on this Earth.  Words cannot express how much of an empty space he has left in our hearts and how much we are going to miss him.  However, we know that he is in a better place, and is smiling down on us.  While it is sad that he is no longer with us, but we will all be joyful that he was and will always be part of our lives.
